    The game has different "surprise" shots. If you land a suprise shot, it gets a damage multiplier, as do many other shots. As far as I can tell, alertness doesn't help much cause these surprise shots have little value over other better shots and are rarely used. But, maybe I'm wrong. I'll be dropping ranged support in order to master a melee prof, just don't see the benefits as that great. The whole tree gets +6 ranged defense, +2 melee defense, +3 to aim which few use, and +10 alertness, which doesn't do much.

    How does the computer know if i was surprised? I mean hell i could be in the other room getting a beer, walk back to computer and BAM....surprise your character is dead! I would definately have been taken off-guard, mods or no mods.

    does this really *do* anything worthwhile? considering swaping this whole ranged support colum for pistol marksman ship.
